Hit the road, Jack.

The Oscars are tonight. I am always all about the Oscars. I plan to watch all of the pre-shows, because I need to see all of the actors and learn who they are wearing.

But my discussion today is not about clothes (although I wish it was). I am going to talk about the Oscar seating plan. Most specifically: Jack Nicholson.

Ol’ Jackie Boy has it made from a Hollywood point of view. He always has a seat in the front row, and all he has to do for those 3 Oscar hours is sit there with his shades on, joyously accepting all of the comments/compliments made about him. He is treated like some kind of acting God, and part of that reason is because of his front row seat.

Sure he has had a Oscar-worthy colourful filmography, but so have other well-established actors. Jack could star in another Dumb and Dumber prequel, and still, next year at the Oscars he would be sitting in the front row.

Therefore, I would like to state that the Academy Awards has strategically placed Jack in the front row to further his career. You can’t buy publicity like that…except maybe if you are Jack Nicholson and have a vast empire of moolah. In conclusion, the Oscars have become huge PR for Mr. Nicholson. Now if you excuse me, I must go buy into the hype that is the Oscars and plant myself in front of my television for 8 straight hours.

Quizilla: Watch Your Back.

February 13, 2008 at 9:38 am (Uncategorized)

As I look back at my old Livejournal entries, I see that I spent a lot of time filling in crazy surveys. “What Flintstones Vitamin are you,” “What is your dirty hooker name,” “Please fill in this survey that asks you 34,574 random questions that you know no one will read.” Surveys that took me over an hour to complete? No problem. As long as it was a distraction from my current essay, I welcomed them.

As I was thinking about a topic for my blog, the idea of a PR survey assaulted my mind. So, here is a survey that everyone should want to read.

Middle name: Dawn

If you were only able to take one quality/skill from this program, what would it be: Learning how to write properly. As long as I can articulate myself through writing, I think I would able to survive.

What PR course have you enjoyed the most so far and why: Computers has been the most fun for me, because learning how to properly use programs makes everything easier. I also enjoy making Valentine’s.

If you were trapped on an island and you could have only ONE PR skill what would it be: The gift of communication. As long as I was able to hold normal conversations with palm trees and sand, I would keep my sanity.

What are you going to write in your letter for the PR students of 08/09: Obviously time management springs to mind, but I want to write something more uplifting. Something to the effect of: times might get really tough and stressful, but there will always be hilarious moments from class to fondly remember. Sometimes it is those funny moments with great people that keep me going through 4 hour classes.

What would your dream PR job be: One of my dream jobs would be doing PR for the K.N.B. Effects Group, who did special effects makeup for numerous horror films. I would also make them teach me how to make spooky creations.

And finally:

If you could be any Flintstones Vitamin, who would you be: I always enjoyed the elephant vacuum cleaner. I would be him.

If you have enjoyed this survey, please copy and paste it into your blog for answering purposes. Or, just take a moment to think of how you would have answered these deep, meaningful and probing questions.

Maybe Quizilla is looking for a PR person who knows how to write great surveys…

Already hip?

February 6, 2008 at 12:35 am (Uncategorized)

This is the question that WordPress has just asked all of us who have started a blog. I went to the “create a blog” page, and my eyes were drawn to the section that said: “Already hip? Sign in to your account.” So, right before this moment, I was not hip. Un-hip. Hipless.

I don’t know. I felt pretty hip and with it before I got this blog. But, I guess this just goes to show you how blogs have become the new phenomenon. If you don’t have one you are hopelessly out of date (WordPress knows it and now we know it).

Maybe I felt hip before signing up to this account, because I already have a blog on livejournal. Obviously my past elljay (slang for “livejournal” for un-hip people) musings were nothing amazing – I didn’t dissect any theories, or write the great Canadian novel – they were only for my reflection. I never saw blogs as a way to express deep notions. If you want to get deep, get yourself published.

Of course, most of my experience with blogs has been reading angsty teenage poetry (not writing any…I swear). For me, it is hard to see this medium as enriching, but I guess that is what this project is all about.

All of us PR students will be able to get up on our virtual soap box each week and wax nostalgic on interesting tidbits. The more I think about it, blogs seem to be a good tool to display writing abilities. Perhaps they can add some colour to a resume/portfolio.

Or perhaps they are some crazy fad that will disappear in a couple of months. All I know is that I will have to keep writing in mine. I mean, I want to stay “hip”…don’t you?
